Spago at the Four Seasons Resort Maui

A Saigon Café

Find great seafood and enormous vegetarian selections at this affordable restaurant that is extremely popular with locals. The food is so good there the diners manage to find there way in somehow even though there isn't any sign pointing at this remarkable restaurant. Once you find it, below the historic bridge in Wailuku, treat yourself to the Vietnamese banh hoi chao tom, more commonly known as "shrimp pops burritos" (ground marinated shrimp, steamed and grilled on a stick of sugarcane). You can even create your own Vietnamese "burritos" from a platter of tofu, noodles, and vegetables that you wrap in rice paper and dip in garlic sauce. Fans drive from all over the island for Jennifer Nguyen crisp spiced Dungeness crab, steamed opakapaka with ginger and garlic, and wok-cooked Vietnamese specials tangy with spices, herbs, and lemon grass. There are a dozen different soups, cold and hot noodles (including the popular beef noodle soup called pho), and chicken and shrimp cooked in a clay pot. The Nhung Dam ( a hearty spread of basil, cucumbers, mint, romaine, bean sprouts, pickled carrots, turnips, and vermicelli, wrapped in rice paper and dipped in a legendary sauce) is cooked at your table.

Joe’s

Perched above the Wailea Tennis Center, with the 270-degree view of the golf course, tennis courts, ocean, and Haleakala, Joe's features American home cooking at its best with a regional twist. Here internationally acclaimed Chef Bev Gannon and her husband, Joe Gannon, a veteran of the Hollywood showbiz industry, create their masterpieces. The hearty staples of this popular Wailea eatery include excellent mashed potatoes, lobster, fresh fish, and filet mignon, but the meatloaf seems to surpass them all. The Tuscan white-bean soup is superb, and the tenderloin, with roasted portobellos, mashed potatoes with whole garlic, and a pinot noir demi-glace, is great. Daily specials could be grilled ahi with white-truffle Yukon gold mashed potatoes or sautéed mahimahi with shrimp bisque and sautéed spinach.

Dessert at Joe's is a must. If chocolate cake is on the menu, you should definitely try it. Joe and Beverly's daughter Cheech Gannon-Shurilla is an accomplished pastry chef, and her mouth watering desserts are a big draw of the restaurant. Only at Joe's you can try her creamy, velvety Chocolate Bread Pudding made with fresh brioche. Forget about your diet as everything at Joe’s is worth every single calorie you may get.

A.K.’s Cafe

Tucked between auto-body shops and karaoke bars, this tiny café in the industrial district of Wailuku serves good island food. It may be a bit off the beaten tourist path, but the creative cuisine of Chef Elaine Rothermel coming out of the kitchen makes it well worth the effort to find this delicious eatery. And you will be delighted by not just great food, but reasonable prices as well. Lunches feature everything from grilled chicken with Thai sauce to fish tacos, from hamburger steak to ahi sandwich with eggplant tempura. Affordable, tasty entrées such as grilled tenderloin with wild mushrooms or garlic-crusted ono with ginger-cucumber relish come with a choice of two sides. Dinner specials include chicken marsala over noodles, crab cakes with papaya beurre blanc, tofu Napoleon with ginger-basil sauce, and Hunan lamb chops. There are plenty of heart-healthy options to choose from (low in sugar, salt, and fat). Try the Hawaiian french-fried sweet potatoes or the poi, the Hawaiian classic made from taro root. On weekends solo musicians entertain the visitors.

Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar

If you are looking for excellent sushi or for unusual seafood as well as meat and vegetable preparations, Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar is a place to visit. This is definitely the best-known sushi restaurant in Maui. But it has a lot more than just sushi, featuring numerous delicious and innovative foods that have nothing to do with sushi. One of the best-loved restaurants in Hawaii with locations on four of the Islands, Sansei features Japanese cuisine with a contemporary Hawaiian twist. Part fusion, part Hawaii Regional Cuisine, Sansei is tirelessly creative, a perpetual award-winner for its outstanding food preparations. Inspired dishes include a panko (Japanese bread crumb)-crusted ahi sashimi roll, rock shrimp in creamy garlic aioli, spicy fried calamari with kochujang (Korean hot pepper paste), and the signature mango-and-crab-salad roll. Other choices include sashimi trio, ahi carpaccio, noodle dishes, lobster, Asian shrimp cakes, and sauces that surprise, in creative combinations such as ginger-lime chile butter and cilantro pesto. If you prefer something simpler, there are shrimp tempura, noodles, and wok-tossed upcountry vegetables. Those who love French cuisine will appreciate the decadent foie gras nigiri sushi.

Don’t miss such desserts as deep-fried tempura ice cream with chocolate sauce and the Granny Smith apple tart with vanilla ice cream and homemade caramel sauce which are worth the calories.

There is karaoke on Thursday and Friday nights from 10 p.m. to 1a.m. Sansei usually has Early Bird discounts, with 25% off most foods ordered from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Old Lahaina Luau
